Before the test

• Fasting as instructed — usually 6–8 hours
• Discuss blood thinners, diabetes medicines and allergies in clinic
• Arrange an escort if sedation is planned

During the procedure

A thin camera examines the food pipe, stomach and duodenum. Throat spray and optional sedation keep discomfort low. The exam itself is typically short.

After the test

Short observation, then light food when throat numbness wears off. Avoid driving the same day if sedation was used. Most desk workers resume routine within 24 hours.

When endoscopy is recommended

Persistent reflux, difficulty swallowing, anaemia, unexplained weight loss, vomiting or failure of medicines — not for every mild one-off acidity episode.

Sedation vs throat spray alone

Some patients prefer minimal sedation; others need deeper comfort. The choice depends on anxiety, prior experience and medical conditions. You will discuss options before the procedure day.

Biopsy — why it is taken

Tiny tissue samples check for inflammation, infection (including H. pylori when indicated) or other changes not visible by eye alone. Biopsy does not mean cancer is suspected in every case.

Returning to work and driving

If sedation was used, avoid driving, cycling or important decisions the same day. Desk work is often fine the next day. Throat mild soreness usually settles quickly.

How endoscopy changes treatment

Results may confirm simple reflux, show ulcer disease, detect inflammation or reassure that the lining looks healthy. That clarity stops years of trial-and-error tablets.
